What do you do for work?
I am an Associate Professor & the Executive Director of the Institute for Women at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, OH.
Where can people find you?
What do you love most about being a woman in business?
I love knowing that I have choices, that I have the ability to contribute to the changes that I want to see. It is very empowering. I also appreciate that I can honor my core values and recognize the ways they directly connect to the work I’m doing. If we take a step back and really pay attention, we often find that we are doing the purpose-driven work we long for.
What is your biggest challenge as a woman in the workplace?
For me, my greatest challenge is being taken seriously. Like many women, I was raised to be “nice” and that is often interpreted as naivety and as if I’m someone easy to steamroll. Of course, it is important to treat others with kindness, but it is also important to be assertive and to let others know that you recognize the value you bring to the table.
What have you done to improve these challenges?
Self-awareness is critical. The more I’ve worked on my own awareness, the more I’ve recognized the ways I participate in creating a particular perception about me. And so, I really focus on being aware of the ways I present myself and communicate with others. Likewise, when I feel imposter syndrome creeping in, I remind myself of the facts and how they conflict with the story I’m telling myself. That is a big help.
Tell us about your business!
I am a coach, consultant, and author and I recently launched my new brainchild, Gig Mama to offer support services to women who need help with business strategy and streamlining the hustle so there is more time to enjoy life.
Why did you choose the job & business you currently have?
As a single mom who always has a side hustle, I understand the feeling of drowning in the day-to-day and the need for support. It is actually what I was always looking for and I decided that if I needed it, so do other women — and why shouldn’t I be the one to launch it? We often wait around for someone to do something (myself included!) and it is really empowering to realize that you are that someone!
What do you love most about yourself?
That I am genuinely a very compassionate and empathic person – it is what drives me to want to engage in the work I do.
What do you love most about your career?
I love that I finally wrote my personal mission statement and realized that the work that I do is directly connected to what is important to me and the contributions I want to make in this lifetime. I’m very committed to supporting diverse women in our journeys and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to share in the growth process of so many women over the years. And as a result, I’ve grown a great deal as well.
What are some of your hobbies?
I’m a writer, so I love to write when the timing is right. But I also love to bake. I grew up baking with my mom and now my daughter and I bake together. Pre-Covid we entered a baking contest together every year and that has created some really wonderful memories for us! I also love working in my yard, planting flowers, and nurturing their growth. And really, I just love learning new things. As a single mom, I try hard to do what I can for myself so I’m a big DIYer!
What brings you the most joy in life?
One hundred percent, the happiest moments in my life are spent with my family around the kitchen table. I host Sunday dinners at my house as often as I can. I love nothing more than the conversations and laughs we share over a meal and it is really wonderful to see the joy those experiences bring my daughter as well.
What else do you wish people knew about you?
I think what is most important for people to know about me is that I care. I genuinely do. I want to know who you are, I want to hear about your struggles and your joys, and I want to help in any way I can. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share in the journeys of others – and for them to share in my journey as well.
